Clay in the Capitol
Every other year when the legislators are in session, Emily Free Wilson heads up a community event called Clay in the Capitol. Clay Artist from across the state come to the capitol and demonstrate how to work with ceramics in the rotunda of the state house. This is in effort to help educate the legislators as to what ceramic art is and how the arts have a good impact on the states economy. “Montana Clay was really excited to share with our legislators and our state that Clay is important and vital. Historically, economically and for our future. The state of Montana is a pretty special place for the field of ceramics. When you start to dig into the mentors, teachers, and pioneers in the field that once called Montana home, you cannot help but feel proud to call yourself a potter or sculptor from Montana” says Emily Free Wilson, the visionary who stated this event. Emily runs a Studio Art Center in Helena and wither husband Matt, they make pottery for a living, running a small business called Free Ceramics.
